My UX design internship in Ingolstadt

Marcel Praktikum UX Designer

Hi there, my name is Marcel. I’m a UX design student at the Technical University in Ingolstadt. To fulfill a graduation requirement, I completed a six-month-long internship at icon incar. Now that it’s over, I’d like to share a little about my time there.

I first heard about icon incar through a fellow student who once held a student job at the design consultancy. He raved about it and I didn’t want to miss out on the chance to experience it first-hand. After an interview, and a ‘thumbs up’ from both sides, I was very happy to an internship lined up.

What’s an internship at icon incar like?

On my first day, I didn’t know at all what to expect. Right away I had the chance to help out on a client project and… wow. No pointless busy work or run-of-the-mill intern tasks. I felt like I was my co-workers’ equal from day one. I was also lucky enough to nearly see through a project from start to finish. This gave me a chance to experience all processes and phases, and I was able to actively participate and contribute my ideas. Whenever I drew a blank, a colleague stepped in to give me a hand. Overall, I really improved my skills in Photoshop, Illustrator and After Effects, in part because of my daily work, in part because of workshops I participated in.

You don’t miss out on the fun either…

During my first month, I attended two important events, the IAA trade fair in Frankfurt and the Oktoberfest in Munich. (You really get to know your co-workers over a few beers!) We also enjoyed hanging out together, be it for a last-minute lunchtime BBQ, a sneak preview in the evening or a game of volleyball at a man-made lake. A clear highlight: two company Christmas parties, one in Berlin together with iconmobile and the other in Ingolstadt for icon incar. Company events like these are a great place to bond with your colleagues – and the positive atmosphere created by that is perceptible from the get-go.

Goodbye internship, hello student job

I loved my time at icon incar so much – especially the people – that I didn’t want to leave the company! Thankfully, the feeling was mutual and I will be back on board as a student worker with my very own project.
